Old Perspective of Protecting Society

For the longest time individuals with disabilities have been sheltered and kept in institutions as a way to ‘protect’ society. What was society being protected from for so many years? One idea of what was shielded from so many people for so long was not a person with a disability, it was the complexity of the supports needed for one person and the idea that this person would need support to be a functioning member of society. Complexity is also referring to what is hard to understand, a disability and the supports needed to care for a person with a disability (Hewitt, 2014). As people we all face stereotypes and different types of injustices in societyl our society is not perfect, nor will it ever be. There are so basic facts that should be noted-individuals with disabilities do not want to live in institutions, but reality is that they face a lot of societal pressure and injustices since leaving institutions (Capie, 2007). Not only are the individuals with the disability affected, so are their families (Capie, 2007).
