Institutions and Community; Same thing...

What we know about the deinstitutionalization process is that it allowed people the chance to function in society and to have opportunities that all of us have. The life of a person living in an institution is one that is controlled and offers no support for their goals, dreams, or a future (Capie, 2007). There is a current debate between the use of institution and a person with a disability’s life in the ‘community’. It is debated and thought that community still refers to a institution and is a means to justify the poor decisions in policy that has been made towards individuals with disabilities (Capie, 2007). In this notion, it would appear that individuals are living a life in the community, outside the walls of an institution, but now the community is their institution as they are still ‘controlled’ (Capie, 2007).
